Kampala Museum

Introduction

The Uganda Museum is a significant institution located in Kampala. It serves as a repository for Uganda's cultural treasures, encompassing ethnological and natural-historical artefacts that reflect traditional life in the country.

History

Established by the British protectorate government in 1908, this museum is East Africa’s oldest. It began with a call from Deputy Governor George Wilson to gather artefacts of interest across Uganda for display. Initially housed in a small Sikh temple at Fort Lugard on Old Kampala Hill, it later relocated due to space constraints and finally settled in its current location on Kitante Hill in 1954.

Collections

The museum holds an extensive range of items including musical instruments that can still be played, hunting gear, weaponry, archaeological finds, and entomological specimens. These collections provide insights into the diverse cultural and natural history of Uganda.

Architectural Design

The museum building itself is a notable landmark designed by German architect Ernst May. The structure was crafted to allow ample natural light and ventilation, crucial for preserving the artefacts within its walls.
