St. George's Cathedral

Addis Ababa Place of worship

Saint George's Cathedral, located at the northern end of Churchill Road in Addis Ababa, stands as a prominent Ethiopian Orthodox church. Its design is marked by its unique octagonal shape, crafted by Italian engineer Sebastiano Castagna in 1911. The cathedral was named after St. George following a historical event where the Tabot (Ark) of the church played a role during the Battle of Adwa against Italy.

The building has witnessed significant moments in Ethiopian history, including the coronation of Empress Zewditu in 1917 and Emperor Haile Selassie in 1930. It also serves as a pilgrimage site for Rastafarians. The cathedral features a museum with displays such as an Imperial throne and stained glass works by Afewerk Tekle, alongside weaponry used in conflicts against the Italians.

Notably, the structure was set ablaze by Italian Fascist authorities in 1937 but was later restored by Emperor Haile Selassie after Ethiopia's liberation in 1941. The cathedral represents a blend of European architectural interpretation and traditional Ethiopian church design, as noted in an Italian tourist publication from 1938.
