Satyagraha House

Johannesburg Museum

Satyagraha House, also known as Gandhi House, is situated in Johannesburg. This property was previously the residence of Mahatma Gandhi during his stay from 1908 to 1909. The structure, designed by architect Hermann Kallenbach, reflects a blend of local and European architectural styles. Named 'Kraal', it consists of two separate houses with shared facilities such as a kitchen and living room for entertaining guests.

During his years in South Africa, Gandhi encountered racial discrimination directly, an experience that profoundly influenced his life's work. The house was later restored by Voyageurs du Monde and opened to the public in 2011 as both a museum and guest house. Today, it is managed by Lauren Segal and serves as a memorial to the concept of non-violent resistance, or 'truth force', that Gandhi championed.
