Sacred Heart Cathedral, Harare
The Sacred Heart Cathedral, located on Fourth Street in the heart of Harare, serves as the main seat for the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Harare. Originally established by Jesuits who arrived in Salisbury (now Harare) in 1893, the cathedral has a rich history that spans over a century. It was designed and built to replace an earlier church deemed too small for its growing congregation. The current structure, which follows the Roman or Latin rite, was officially opened on August 2, 1925, following the laying of its foundation stone in June 1924 by Monsignor Brown. Today, Masses are conducted in multiple languages including English and Shona to cater for a diverse congregation, with additional services in French and Portuguese available at times.
Mass schedules vary throughout the week, offering several options on Sundays such as early morning English Masses and mid-morning Shona services. Weekdays typically feature two English Masses during the day, followed by a Shona service in the evening, while Saturdays offer an early morning English Mass.
