Olduvai Gorge Museum
Established in the late 1970s by renowned archaeologist Mary Leakey, the Olduvai Gorge Museum is now managed by the Tanzanian government’s Department of Cultural Antiquities and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority. It showcases paleoanthropological artifacts from the surrounding area, including exhibits on the Laetoli fossilized footprints.
The museum sits along the rim of Olduvai Gorge in northern Tanzania, about 5 km beyond a turnoff from the main road between Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater. Its collections are centred around research conducted by the Leakey family and others, featuring original artifacts as well as casts.
The museum underwent significant renovations and expansions in recent years, introducing new exhibits and a cultural boma to explore Maasai culture. Visitors can also enjoy outdoor lecture areas for guided presentations. The site attracts thousands of tourists daily during peak season, primarily arriving by safari car en route to Serengeti National Park.
