History

The idea for the museum was conceived in July 1948 when architectural plans were presented at a Nigerian conference on museum policy. Established in 1957 by Kenneth Murray, an English archaeologist, it aimed to preserve Nigeria’s rich historical heritage. The British Museum contributed several artefacts during its early years.
