Kampala Place of worship

Dedication and Significance

The Munyonyo Martyrs’ Shrine, a Roman Catholic shrine and Minor Basilica, is dedicated to the Ugandan martyrs. This site marks where King Mwanga first decided to persecute Christians, leading to their tragic deaths.

Historical Context

In May 1886, three young men—St. Denis Ssebugwawo, St. Andrew Kaggwa and St. Pontiano Ngondwe—became the first victims of this persecution at Munyonyo. The Christian servants of King Mwanga were later taken to Namugongo for execution.

Pontiano's Martyrdom

Pontiano was killed on his way to Namugongo, near Kyamula, becoming the third martyr. Meanwhile, Fr. Symeon Lourdel attempted in vain to meet King Mwanga to save the condemned Christians.

The Baptism of Catechumens

The night before the persecution began, Charles Lwanga secretly baptised four catechumens at Munyonyo: St. Kizito, St. Mbaga, St. Gyavira and St. Muggaga.

The Final Journey

The next day, King Mwanga separated Christians from his court and condemned them to death. The martyrs endured a harrowing journey to Namugongo where they were executed on 3 June 1886.
