Mitchell Park Zoo

Durban Park

Mitchell Park Zoo, located in the Morningside suburb of Durban, South Africa, stands out as the city’s only zoo. Initially founded as an ostrich farm in 1910, it struggled financially and thus began to diversify its animal collection. Notably, the zoo once housed Nellie, a gift from the Maharajah of Mysore in 1928, who was known for her unique talents such as playing the mouth organ and cracking coconuts with her feet.

Today, Mitchell Park Zoo focuses on smaller animals including blue duiker, small South American monkeys, raccoons, and various birds. The largest creatures now are Aldabra giant tortoises. Visitors can also explore a children's playground, a walk-through aviary, and the Blue Zoo tea garden, along with ample space for picnics. Adjacent to Jameson Park, which was formerly a pineapple plantation, the zoo offers a variety of wildlife and recreational activities.

The mammal collection includes species such as suni, suricate, ground squirrel, banded mongoose, white-eared marmosets, cotton-top tamarins, black-capped squirrel monkeys, and raccoons. The bird section is home to various parrot species, peafowls, grey crowned cranes, black swans, silver pheasants, Nicobar pigeons, scarlet ibises, Carolina wood ducks, and white imperial pigeons.
