Millennium Park
Located in Maitama district, Millennium Park stands as the largest public park in Abuja. The inauguration took place on 4 December 2003 with Queen Elizabeth II leading the ceremony. Adjacent to the former Presidential Palace and other key government buildings, the park features a river that bisects its main axis into two distinct areas.
One area is dedicated to showcasing Nigeria’s diverse natural landscapes, including mountain vegetation, savanna, deciduous forest, rainforest, and brushwood, alongside greenhouses for butterflies and tropical birds. The other side of the park focuses on scientific education about the environment, designed in a traditional Italian style with a central path paved with Roman white travertine that extends into the greenery. This pathway includes fountains to cool visitors during hot days and is lined by colourful bushes arranged in wave-like patterns.
Designed by Italian architect Manfredi Nicoletti, Millennium Park has become a significant attraction for Abuja residents and visitors alike. During its opening ceremony, each Commonwealth Head of State planted a Ravenala madagascariensis palm to symbolically inaugurate the park.
