Manhyia Palace
The Manhyia Palace, located in the heart of Kumasi, is the seat and official residence of the Asantehene. Originally constructed by the British in 1925 following the demolition of an earlier structure during a conflict with the Ashanti Empire, it has since been home to several kings of the Asante nation. The original palace was transformed into a museum in 1995 after the construction of a new one nearby. This museum now houses various artefacts, including royal furniture and life-sized wax effigies of past monarchs.
The architecture of the Manhyia Palace blends traditional Asante styles with modern elements, featuring expansive courtyards adorned with statues of former rulers. The newer palace includes amenities such as a conference room, a wine bar, and a main hall that spans over 1,200 square metres. Additionally, the complex houses the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Jubilee Hall, a multi-purpose venue named after the current Asantehene, designed for various events including cultural performances.
