Mandela Bay Theatre Complex
Mandela Bay Theatre Complex, formerly known as the Port Elizabeth Opera House, stands as an iconic venue for performing arts in Gqeberha. Since its opening in 1892, it has been declared a national monument and serves as one of the preferred spots for performances in the Eastern Cape. The theatre complex houses both a main stage with seating for 598 patrons across two levels and a smaller multi-function space known as The Barn Theatre, which can accommodate between 100 to 150 people depending on the production style.
Initially lit by candles and limelight until gas lighting was introduced in the early years, this venue has hosted numerous international performers alongside notable South African artists such as Athol Fugard and John Kani.
