Kasubi Tombs
Historical Significance
The Kasubi Tombs in Kampala serves as a spiritual and political hub for the Ganda people. It houses the remains of four kabakas (kings) and other members of Buganda's royal lineage, making it a site of profound cultural importance.
Architectural Distinction
The monument is renowned for its traditional architecture, constructed entirely from natural materials. It stands as an exemplary structure in the sub-Saharan region, recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since December 2001.
Tragedy and Restoration
A devastating fire in March 2010 almost obliterated some of its key buildings. This led to the site being listed among endangered World Heritage Sites until reconstruction efforts began in 2014, supported by a fundraising campaign known as Etofaali.
Rebuilding Efforts
The Buganda Kingdom committed to rebuilding the tombs with assistance from the Ugandan government. The restoration project also received support from Japan's government and was completed in 2023, leading to its removal from the endangered list.
