Kamuku National Park

Kaduna Park

Kamuku National Park, covering about 1,120 km², is situated in the western part of Kaduna State, Nigeria. Adjacent to Kwiambana Game Reserve and near a main town, it was originally established as a forest reserve before being upgraded to a national park in 1999 due to successful sustainable resource management projects by local communities.

The park's landscape includes the Dogon Ruwa Waterfalls, Goron Dutse inselberg, and Tsaunin Rema rock formation. Vegetation is primarily Guinea Savanna with some Sudan Savanna elements, featuring trees like Isoberlinia doka and Terminalia avicennioides.

Biodiversity in Kamuku National Park includes over 19 mammal species such as elephants, roan antelopes, and various bird species. It is particularly noted for rare birds like the secretarybird and Denham's bustard. The park faces challenges from illegal cattle grazing and hunting by local pastoralists.

Surrounding communities include the Gwari and Kamuku people, traditional farmers and craftsmen who consider parts of the park sacred. Operations in the park were suspended in 2021 due to regional insecurity.
