Johannesburg Zoo
The Johannesburg Zoo, or Joburg Zoo, spans a vast 55-hectare area within the city of Johannesburg. This expansive facility is dedicated to the care and enrichment of around 2000 individual animals from approximately 320 different species. Originally part of Hermann Eckstein's Braamfontein farm, the land was converted into a timber plantation in 1891 before being offered as recreational space by Wernher Beit & Co and Max Michaelis to the Johannesburg Town Council in 1904.
The zoo has undergone significant transformations since its inception. Initially established with limited enclosures for lions and leopards, it evolved into a more modern facility featuring open and landscaped environments from the 1960s onwards. It remains one of few public spaces that were not segregated during Apartheid.
Notably, the zoo has had success in breeding white lions and Siberian tigers. In recent years, it transitioned into a Section 21 non-profit organisation to ensure financial sustainability. The zoo offers various visitor experiences, including guided tours, night visits, and overnight stays. A new R45 million parkade now accommodates over 700 vehicles, enhancing visitor access.
