Independence Memorial Museum
Location and Design
Situated on Robert Mugabe Avenue, the Independence Memorial Museum is a striking architectural feat. Designed by Mansudae Overseas Projects from North Korea, its unique structure has been compared to a potjie, a coffee pot, and even a molar tooth.
Historical Focus
The museum delves into Namibia's anti-colonial resistance and the fight for national liberation. It serves as an educational tool, highlighting key moments in the country’s journey towards independence.
Additional Works by Mansudae
Mansudae Overseas Projects also created three other significant public works in Namibia: Heroes' Acre, Okahandja Military Museum, and a new State House, alongside the Independence Memorial Museum.
Statues Adjacent to the Museum
Adjacent to the museum are two notable statues constructed by Mansudae. One is dedicated to Sam Nujoma, Namibia's first president, and the other is the Genocide Memorial, honouring those lost in historical conflicts.
Inauguration
The Independence Memorial Museum was officially opened on March 20, 2014. This date marked the twenty-fourth anniversary of Namibia's independence and was inaugurated by President Hifikepunye Pohamba.
