Houses of Parliament
Historical Overview
The Houses of Parliament in Cape Town stands as the central hub for South Africa's national legislature. This complex comprises three distinct sections: the original building from 1884, now housing the National Council of Provinces; the Old Assembly constructed in 1910; and the more recent National Assembly building, completed between 1983 and 1985.
Recent Renovations
In January 2022, a fire caused considerable damage to both the Old Assembly and the National Assembly buildings. As a result, these sections are now in the midst of an extensive renovation process aimed at modernising while preserving their historical significance.
Heritage Status
Since 2014, the Houses of Parliament has been recognised as a National Heritage Site by SAHRA and was awarded Grade 1 heritage status. This designation underscores its importance in South African history and culture.
Renovation Project Details
The renovation project is expected to cost R 4.6 billion and aims to blend modern facilities with the historical integrity of the site. Completion of this ambitious undertaking is scheduled for June 2027, marking a significant milestone in the preservation and enhancement of the Parliament complex.
