Holy Ghost Cathedral, Mombasa
The Holy Ghost Cathedral, also known simply as Mombasa Cathedral, serves as the city’s main Catholic sanctuary and is the seat of the Bishop of the Archdiocese. The initial Catholic mission in Mombasa was established by Father Alexander le Roy in 1889, who founded it with other Missionaries of the Holy Spirit. Initially located in Ndia Kuu within the ancient city of Mombasa, the missionaries soon found their conditions intolerable and moved to a larger plot acquired in Makadara in January 1898. The first church was completed by Easter Sunday that year but quickly became too small for the growing congregation. As a result, construction on a new cathedral began in 1919 and concluded four years later.
