Gold Reef City
Located on the site of a former gold mine that ceased operations in 1971, Gold Reef City is situated to the south of Johannesburg’s Central Business District. The park captures the essence of the Witwatersrand gold rush era through its themed attractions and architecture. Visitors can explore a museum showcasing gold mining history and observe a gold vein within an ore sample.
The amusement park features diverse attractions such as roller coasters, water rides, and even a casino. Among the popular rides are the Anaconda, a unique inverted coaster, and the Tower of Terror, known for its high g-forces and vertical drop into a mineshaft. Other notable attractions include the UFO, which spins while tilting to near 60 degrees, and the Giant Wheel, offering panoramic views.
In 2013, concerns arose over potential flooding due to rising acidic mine water beneath the park, leading to temporary closures of mine tours and relocation of the museum exhibits closer to ground level.
