Gidan Makama Museum, Kano

Kano Museum

Gidan Makama Museum, situated on Emir Palace road in Kano, Nigeria, is housed within a 15th-century structure that once served as a temporary palace for the Sarakunan Hausa before the construction of Gidan Rumfa. This National Monument boasts eleven galleries dedicated to showcasing traditional arts, crafts, and historical items pertinent to Kano's heritage.

The museum's collections span from traditional architecture materials to religious history, colonial impact, economic activities, and musical instruments. Noteworthy exhibits include excavated pots from the city walls and two colonial cannons at the entrance gates. The galleries also depict Fulani influence in Kano’s history, the civil war period, and traditional occupations such as farming and textile production.

An open space within the museum functions as a stage for performances by a Koroso dance and drama group, adding a vibrant cultural dimension to its historical offerings.
