Freedom Park

Lagos Park

Located in the heart of downtown Lagos on Lagos Island, Freedom Park was formerly known as Her Majesty's Broad Street Prison. The transformation into a memorial and leisure space was conceptualised by architect Theo Lawson under the Cultural Intellectual Association (formerly CIA-Lagos) in 1999. The park honours Nigeria’s cultural heritage and historical past, particularly its colonial legacy and the role of political activists who were imprisoned there during the fight for independence.

Monuments within the park reflect on Lagos's colonial history and the prison's past. Open daily to the public, it serves multiple purposes including as a national memorial, historical landmark, cultural site, arts centre, and recreational area. In March 2024, WAF Skatepark became Nigeria’s first skatepark located inside Freedom Park.

Originally established in 1861 after Britain declared Lagos a colony, the prison was initially built with mud walls and grass thatch but soon had to be rebuilt using bricks imported from England due to repeated sabotage by colonial opponents. The site later fell into disuse until plans emerged in the 1990s to revitalise it as a creative space.
