Fort Jesus Museum
Historical Background
Fort Jesus, or Boma la Yesu la Mombasa in Swahili, is an iconic structure located on Mombasa Island. Built between 1593 and 1596 under the command of King Felipe II of Spain, who also ruled as King Filipe I of Portugal and the Algarves, it was intended to safeguard the Old Port of Mombasa.
Architectural Design
The fort's design is attributed to Italian architect Giovanni Battista Cairati, inspired by Pietro Cataneo. Cairati, who executed his last overseas project here, designed Fort Jesus with Renaissance architectural elements. The construction was overseen by master builder Gaspar Rodrigues.
Construction Techniques
The fort's masonry techniques and materials are believed to have been supplied by local Swahili workers. This blend of European design and indigenous workmanship reflects the cultural exchange during that era.
Fort Layout
Fort Jesus is laid out in a shape resembling a man when viewed from above, with its roughly square form featuring four bulwarks at each corner. The fortification exemplifies late Renaissance military architecture, making it a significant historical monument.
