Christ Church, Windhoek

Windhoek Place of worship

Christ Church (German: Christuskirche), a significant landmark and Lutheran church in Windhoek, belongs to the German-speaking Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia. Designed by architect Gottlieb Redecker, it was erected as a peace symbol after conflicts between Germans and local tribes.

The construction used quartz sandstone from near Avis Dam, blending neo-Romanesque, Art Nouveau, and Gothic Revival styles. Its spire reaches 24 metres in height. The portico is crafted from Italian Carrara marble, while the clock, part of the roof, and three bronze bells were imported from Germany.

Emperor Wilhelm II donated the church's stained lead glass windows. In the late 1990s, these were restored to ensure sun protection shields faced outward. The church sits on a traffic island along Robert Mugabe Avenue, opposite the Tintenpalast.
