Chichiri Museum
The Chichiri Museum, alternatively named the Museum of Malawi, stands as a significant cultural and historical site in Blantyre. Initially conceived by the Society of Malawi in the 1950s, it was legally established in May 1957 under the name Nyasaland Museum. The museum's current location on Chichiri Hill, constructed in 1965 with financial support from the Beit Trust and the Government of Malawi, was inaugurated by Kamuzu Banda in June 1966.
The collection encompasses a variety of exhibits both indoors and outdoors, including a transport display featuring a steam engine and a fire engine. Notably, an outdoor section includes a Ndiwula hut constructed under President Kamuzu Banda's instructions in 1966. The museum is also home to the Machinga Meteorite, weighing 93.2Kg and classified as a shocked L6c chondrite in 1984, with a reclassification to L6d in 1990.
