Central Methodist Church, Cape Town

Cape Town Place of worship

Situated on Greenmarket Square, the Central Methodist Church stands as an important landmark for Methodism in South Africa. Known also by its other names, Central Methodist Mission and Metropolitan Methodist Church, it has been pivotal in fostering religious growth since its establishment. The church emerged from a merger between the Metropolitan Church and Buitenkant Street Church in 1988.

Historically, this place of worship has been at the forefront of social activism. It is particularly remembered for its yellow banner campaign aimed at raising awareness on critical issues. During apartheid protests, it faced damage from police water cannons but continued to serve as a sanctuary for refugees and protesters in 2019.

Architecturally, Central Methodist Church reflects high-Victorian Gothic Revival style, featuring a lean-to roof and a tower with a spire. Construction began in 1876 and was completed three years later under the design of architect Charles Freeman and contractor Thomas Inglesby. This building is recognised as the second oldest on Greenmarket Square after the Old Town House, opposite it.
