Harare Place of worship

Situated at the crossroads of Nelson Mandela Avenue and Sam Nujoma Street in Harare, the Cathedral of St Mary and All Saints is an enduring symbol of religious and architectural resilience. The initial design was conceived by British architect Herbert Baker in 1913, who also left his mark on cathedrals in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

The construction under Bishop Frederic Beaven saw the sanctuary and choir completed within a year but faced decades of delays due to incomplete sections covered with corrugated iron. The original sandstone quarry was nearly exhausted by the time full completion was sought, prompting an innovative solution: new blocks were created using stone dust from the original quarry mixed with concrete, ensuring continuity in texture and appearance.

Inside, the nave features 14 murals depicting the stations of the Cross, painted for Easter celebrations in 1981. The cathedral's bell tower houses ten bells cast in London. Four chapels are dedicated to various saints and a local martyr, Bernard Mizeki.

The cathedral has also endured legal battles over its ownership, eventually returning to the Church of the Province of Central Africa after a protracted dispute with excommunicated former bishop Nolbert Kunonga. Today, it remains an important place of worship under Bishop Farai Mutamiri's leadership.
