Cathedral Church of Christ, Lagos

Lagos Place of worship

Situated on Lagos Island, the Cathedral Church of Christ Marina is an iconic Anglican cathedral in Nigeria. Founded in 1869 with its cornerstone laid in 1867, it marked its 150th anniversary in 2017. The current structure, designed by Bagan Benjamin and initiated in 1924, was completed in 1946 after the foundation stone was laid by the Prince of Wales.

The cathedral houses the relics of Rev Dr Samuel Ajayi Crowther, a former enslaved Yoruba man who became Nigeria's first African bishop. It has served as the seat for various archbishops and is currently the seat of the Bishop of Lagos. Known for its grand organ built by Oberlinger Orgelbau with 64 stops on four manuals and a pedalboard, it stands as Nigeria’s largest.

Notable events include President Yakubu Gowon's marriage in 1969 and funerals such as that of telecommunications engineer Victor Adetunji Haffner in 2015. The cathedral remains a significant place of worship and historical importance in Lagos.
