Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Bulawayo
The Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception is a prominent place of worship affiliated with the Catholic Church. It serves as the seat for the Metropolitan Archbishop of Bulawayo. In 2013, it was elevated to the status of Minor Basilica by Pope Francis.
Its origins trace back to the Jesuits who built a small chapel in the mid-1890s. The cornerstone, brought from Croatia, was laid in 1903 by Bishop Sykes, and the structure opened for worship on April 3, 1904. It functioned as a pro-cathedral from 1920 until it received its cathedral title in 1955. Pope John Paul II visited this sacred site during his trip to Bulawayo in September 1988.
Inside, the basilica reflects Gothic architecture with its long and narrow nave, high ceiling, and pointed arches supported by columns.
