Bulawayo Museum

Bulawayo Railway Museum, established in 1972, is nestled within Bulawayo railway station in Zimbabwe and offers visitors a glimpse into the country's extensive railway heritage. The museum's collection spans from 1897 and includes notable items such as Cecil Rhodes' personal coach. National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) owns this repository of locomotives, coaches, wagons, and other artefacts that reflect the evolution of rail transport in Zimbabwe.

The exhibits are categorised into steam locomotives, diesel electric locomotives, coaches, wagons, trolleys, railway cranes, and miscellaneous items. Notable among these are various classes of steam locomotives, including the Lawley 4-4-0 Falcon and several Garratt models. The museum also houses a range of diesel electric locomotives from different manufacturers.

Additional highlights include dining cars, engine caboose coaches, guards vans, and goods wagons made of both wood and metal. Trolleys used for railway line inspections and artefacts like typewriters and train ticketing machines are part of the collection too. The museum features two key buildings: Shamva Station, a relocated Rhodesian Railways station that now serves as the main reception, and the Main Hall, which was originally a mechanical workshop.

The management of Bulawayo Railway Museum is under the stewardship of Gordon Murray, a former member of the company. The museum stands as a testament to Zimbabwe's railway legacy, preserving its rich history for future generations.
