Black Star Gate
Accra Monument
Situated at the heart of Black Star Square (formerly Independence Square) in Accra, the Black Star Gate is a significant monument. Its design features the iconic Black Star of Africa, a five-pointed star that represents both the continent and Ghana's hard-won independence.
Commissioned by Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president, this structure was created to embody the nation's authority over its own destiny after gaining freedom from British rule in 1957. The monument holds such importance that it is even depicted on national currency, notably on the reverse of a particular cedis note.
