Alte Feste

Windhoek Museum

The Alte Feste, or Old Fortress, is a significant historical structure located in the heart of Windhoek on Robert Mugabe Avenue. Originally designed by Captain Curt von François to serve as the headquarters for the German colonial military force during the late 19th century, it was never actually involved in any combat operations. The fortress's design evolved over its construction period until completion in 1915, featuring an inner courtyard and accommodation within high walls.

Following World War I, it served as a military base for South African forces before becoming a hostel for Windhoek High School students in the mid-20th century. In recognition of its historical importance, it was declared a National Monument in 1957 and underwent extensive renovations in 1963.

Today, though temporarily closed due to urgent renovation needs, the Alte Feste is set to house both a Centre for Arts, Crafts, and Heritage and a Museum of Genocide and Colonial History upon reopening. This dual-purpose museum will aim to preserve and share Namibia's rich history with visitors from around the world.
